by Krista Clarxzon

Are you prepared for the colonoscopy prep procedures?

Anyone over the age of 50 years old should have regular colon exams every 10 years. I your family has a genetic history of colon cancer your doctor may recommend a short waiting period between exams.

The anticipation of going to the doctor is often much worse than what the doctor will do. If the procedure is very bad you will be given a sedative or other pain killer to help you through it.

Asking a friend or relative to come with you is a smart thing to do and it required. You will not be allowed to drive after the procedure due to the sedatives you will receive.

Two doctors that you may speak to are a Proctologist and a Gastroenterologist. These doctors specialize in the process that the organs perform when food enters the body and is eliminated from the body.

Staying well hydrated is one of the more difficult things to do before, during and after a colonospopy. Since the main purpose of the prep is to flush and clean the colon your system will need an unusual amount of water.

The colonoscopy prep included being on a liquid diet in the days before the colonoscopy. You may be able to drink plain coffee, plain tea, fat-free bouillon or broth, strained fruit juice or diet soda. No sugar or fat or food coloring is allowed.

In an attempt to improve the methods when preparing for a colonoscopy a pill has been developed. This pill allows for better cleaning of the colon and may allow the test be performed more quickly. Your doctor will tell you what is right for you.

Let’s hope that we can develop a pill that we can take that’s like a Russian space station. Take the pill and it setup a command post and relays data about our colon the hospital. I don’t have to leave my house. I can only hope.
